Big Sardinia: what's coming this year — the once-a-year things worth planning around
You find out about most of this the way everyone does here — after it's already happened, or halfway through, from a photo in someone's feed. This page exists to flip that: the big, plannable things on the island's calendar, far enough ahead that you can actually decide whether to go.
This isn't the weekly "what's on" list. That covers your comune and the next two weekends. This is the short list of things that happen once a year, draw an international crowd, and are worth a day of your own before the tourists arrive or after they've gone.
This year, near Alghero
WRC Rally Italia Sardegna — 1 to 4 October 2026. A round of the World Rally Championship, based this year in Alghero itself: the service park sits on the seafront promenade, and the final podium is in the city at 17:00 on Sunday. Seventeen special stages, over 300 competitive kilometres, almost entirely on gravel roads through Monte Acuto, Anglona and Nurra. You don't need a ticket to watch a stage from a public roadside spot — check the official route map for access points, and expect road closures on stage days near the route. If you only go to one thing on this list because it's the one on your doorstep, make it this.
Rolex Swan Cup — 13 to 19 September, Porto Cervo. A biennial regatta (back this year) for Swan-built yachts, based at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Racing runs 16–19 September with the first start signal at noon. No public ticketing or dedicated spectator parking — the sailing itself is visible from the coast and headlands around Porto Cervo.
The wider Costa Smeralda sailing season (YCCS calendar, 2026)
Porto Cervo runs one of the densest sailing calendars in the Mediterranean. The season's highlights, roughly in order:
- Range Rover Sardinia Cup, 31 May – 7 June — a historic regatta returning after 14 years away
- Rolex TP52 World Championship, 15–20 June — top-tier keelboat racing
- Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, 6–12 September — the flagship event for yachts over 18.3 metres, running for over 40 years
- J/70 Cup and Italian Championship, closing the season in early October
None of these have public grandstands in the way a stadium event would — the appeal is watching world-class boats from the headlands, or from a boat of your own if you have access to one. Full calendar and any updates: the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's official site.
What else belongs on a list like this
We're building this page as a living document — sky events (meteor showers, any eclipse visible from Sardinia), major concerts and festivals, and other sporting fixtures that draw a real crowd. If you know of something that belongs here — a date, a source, an event we've missed — reply to any edition and tell us. This is exactly the kind of thing a resident knows before a search engine does.
How to actually plan around one of these
- Check road closures near the date, especially for the rally — stage roads close to normal traffic during running and the brief carries specific closures as they're announced.
- Book accommodation early if you're travelling within Sardinia to watch — regatta and rally weeks fill the nearest towns.
- Free to watch ≠ free to park. Public roadside viewing is normally free; anything with a marked viewing area, hospitality tent, or grandstand isn't.
- The best local knowledge is a local. For exact viewing spots on rally stages or the best headland for watching a start, ask in the directory or wait for our week-of coverage — official maps show the route, not the best view.
A running list, not a complete one. Dates and details come from official event sources and can change — always confirm road closures and access with the organiser closer to the date. Last reviewed: September 2026.
